A BRIEF HISTORY
The first deeds for the house date back to 1850 and from then until 1934 it was owned by various wealthy families who used it as a summer residence and a place for leisure, drawn to Mijas by the warm weather, the quality of the mountain air and the purity of the water from the many springs that supplied the town.
Notable among these owners were Rafael Romero Aguado, who became the 2nd President of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo, and the engineer Fernando Loring Martínez, who was the son, grandson and great-grandson of very prominent figures in 19th-century Spain’s industrial development: Manuel Loring Heredia, George Henry Loring Oyarzábal, George Loring James and Manuel Agustín Heredia Martínez.
From 1934 onwards, the house was successively acquired by various families in the municipality until it was bought by the current owners’ grandparents in 1941. From then on, due to the considerable size of the house and its prime location, in addition to being the family home, it was also used for intense commercial and business activities. The patios were used for a wide range of tasks that followed one after the other according to the seasons: palm and esparto grass were threshed here; cereals, oil and lime were traded; and sultanas and dried figs were packed for sale.
On the ground floor there was a tavern, which for years was a meeting place for neighbours and businessmen and where a good number of the deals of the time were probably made. It then became a casa de comidas, a place that served home-cooked food to both locals and outsiders who were visiting Mijas on business or for leisure. Several rooms on the upper floor were fitted out to accommodate those who came to sell their goods or to spend a few days of rest and for many years it was the only building with these characteristics that existed in the locality. The owners continued to serve food as a casa de comidas until the end of the 1950s and offered accommodation well into the 1970s.
With the renovation that ended in 2021, the building is once more being used as it was in the last century: as a space for accommodation, food and commerce. However, the current owners have added a completely fresh perspective and philosophy with the aim of becoming a reference point for providing high quality tourist services, not only for Mijas but also for the entire western Costa del Sol.
